The Tories shift to left wing state interventionism pre-curses a return to austerity measures post-pandemic.
I risk getting shot for saying the Tories’ austerity measures were a necessity. In my opinion, after any major crisis, cuts need to be made and the nation’s finances need time and space to balance themselves out. That’s what David Cameron was trying to do - giving the economy space to breath.
A substantial portion of the Tory vote is the over-70 market. These are largely men and women who grew up before the welfare state we have today and earned their keep, rather than were automatically granted it. They did not rely on the state to achieve their goals - they relied on each other. Perhaps we should do so too now.
