To celebrate the release of ‘Possessor’, I run down 5 scenes that shivered me timbers…
‘Possessor’ (2020) is currently out on home viewing services. It’s the latest film from Brandon Cronenberg (son of David) and I really like it. It blends typically Cronenbergian body horror with ideas about cyber-stalking and the dangers of technological advancements.
Most notably, it features one of the scariest sequences of the year. In one scene, a woman puts on a mask ripped off of another woman’s face. The grotesque designs reminded me of ‘La Belle et La Bete’ (1946) and ‘Eyes Without A Face’ (1960).
It got me thinking about my favourite scary movie moments. Most people would pick the chest-burster scene in ‘Alien’ (1979), the raptor kitchen stakeout in ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993) or the bit in ‘Jaws’ (1975) where Chrissie gets eaten.
Then there’s the shower scene in ‘Psycho’ (1960) - a sneaky bit of body wash terror amplified by Bernard Herrmann’s score (EEK! EEK! EEK!). Many people would probably pick Johnny Depp’s bed demise in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (1984). Or those chilling climactic moments in ‘The Wicker Man’ (1973) where Edward Woodward is burned alive.
Even off the big screen, one moment that really scared me was the scene in ‘Twin Peaks’ (1990-2017) where Killer Bob first appears; hiding behind the bed.
All these scenes are scary, but frankly not scary enough to make this list. To celebrate the release of ‘Possessor’, I ran down my top 5 scariest movie moments. SPOILERS AHEAD - you’ve been warned…
